The gate & road resurfacing

As a resource intended to be of interest to both old and new residents and as a reference for the future, we have provided a history section to be expanded with more material as the website develops. A rough chronological framework is used here to structure the information we have to date on Ruston Mews.

The gate and subsequent road resurfacing was probably the largest project undertaken by RMA and has added significantly to the quality of life in the mews.

Photos of the gate area prior to its construction are shown below. Notice the patched tarmac where the potholes have been filled in and resurfaced.

Work on the gate started around 1993/4 and required significant engineering design inputs in order to secure planning permission from RBKC and to firm up costs so that finances could be put in place.

Some of the drawings that were produced for the gate are shown below:

The gate was financed by a loan from Mr Baulch at No 38 and enabled the construction of the gate with all the additional piers, bollards and fencing to be undertaken along with the complete removal of the top surface of the mews and relaying with new asphalt. The vast majority of Ruston Mews residents agreed to enter into binding arrangements with RMA to pay back this loan to Mr Baulch over a period of 7 years and all aspects of the financing arrangements were completed in 2003.

Below are some photos of the road construction during 1995.

On the completion of the gate in August 1995 the gate leaves were finally closed and the difference to the mews was profound. It became a closer community almost immediately and a street party was held to celebrate the completion of this major milestone.
